Coping With Prostate Cancer
October 28, 2011 @ 10:06:39 AM EST

Prostate cancer refers to a form of male cancer that typically affects men who are older. However, a number of younger men have also been diagnosed with this type of male cancer. While some cancers take a relatively long amount of time to develop, others are much more aggressive and can even spread from the reproductive system, specifically the prostate gland, to other organs. Prostate cancer does exhibit signs and symptoms that indicate the male cancer has reached an advanced stage. These symptoms include frequent and painful urination.

When a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, there are often feelings of denial that gradually transform into anger and even depression. Family members are also adversely affected as they try to cope with the situation and provide the patient with the support that he needs. During this challenging time as one comes to grip with male cancer, it is necessary for family members to be as supportive and positive as possible. Considering that thousands of men are diagnosed with the condition on an annual basis, there is no doubt that there are several patients who struggle to come to terms with the situation and may find it very difficult to maintain a positive attitude.

Loved ones feel helpless as the patient may not want to show how vulnerable or afraid they are.
Just like with any other type of cancer, the earlier a diagnosis is made, the easier it will be to manage the condition and even cure it. It is normal for the patient to experience negative emotions and even show resentment towards loved ones because of the bitterness and confusion that they feel. Since the condition is bound to have financial implications, it is important to carefully plan for this reality and make sure that one is able to cope financially with the situation through a comprehensive health plan, for example. It is also necessary for family members such as parents and spouses to provide assistance in handling various aspects of the patient’s life, especially if he is quite unwell.

Coping with cancer effectively requires communication. Although the patient may want to be alone from time to time, loved ones should make an effort to encourage him to express himself and share his feelings whenever possible. However, communication should never be forced or imposed because this can cause further frustration. Relationships can be strengthened during such a difficult time as people begin to appreciate each other more along with the value of health and life. It is essential for family members and even friends to remain actively involved in the process of ensuring that the patient receives the treatment and attention they need. This involves being there for the person, giving them support when they go to see their doctor and spending quality time together. Coping with cancer can be challenging but it is possible as long as there is a supportive environment and understanding.

Dealing with Loss
October 17, 2011 @ 10:09:55 PM EST

When I was 6 I lost my gradfather to prostate cancer. At the time, I didn't really understand what was happening, other than that he took a lot of naps. I knew he was sick, because I had gone to visit him in the hospital, but nothing really hit home until he passed away and I realized that I would never get to see him again. Aside form my parents, he was who I spent most of my time with.

In the years since his passing, I've done my part in volunteering and donating to support the research of prostate cancer. Now I'm hoping to be able to get the word out online and help others to find the information they need, whether it be how to cope with loss, or how to deal with the stress and depression of being ill, or having a loved one who is.

Family History of Prostate Cancer Has No Impact On The Treatment Outcomes
In a first of its kind study, a first-degree family history of prostate cancer has no impact on the therapy outcomes of patients with prostate cancer treated with brachytherapy (also called seed implants), and patients with this type of family history have clinical and pathologic characteristics similar to men with no family history at all, as per a January 1 study in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology........
Reason for failure of hormonal therapy of prostate cancer
The hormone deprivation treatment that patients with prostate cancer often take gives them only a temporary fix, with tumors commonly regaining their hold within a couple of years. Now, scientists at Johns Hopkins have discovered critical differences in the hormone receptors on prostate cancer cells in patients who no longer respond to this treatment. The findings, published in the Jan. 1 issue of Cancer Research, could lead to a way to track disease progression, as well as new targets to fight prostate cancer........
Cough medicine ingredient could treat prostate cancer
A study published recently in the recent issue of the European medical journal Anticancer Research demonstrates that an ingredient used in a common cough suppressant may be useful in treating advanced prostate cancer. Scientists observed that noscapine, which has been used in cough medicine for nearly 50 years, reduced tumor growth in mice by 60% and limited the spread of tumors by 65% without causing harmful side effects........
Low-income men and advanced prostate cancer
Low-income men are more likely to present with advanced prostate cancers, most likely because they don't receive screening services shown to reduce the diagnosis of later-stage cancers, a UCLA study found. The study focused on a group of disadvantaged men enrolled in the state's IMPACT (Improving Access, Counseling and Treatment for Californians
